On 23rd August, 1989, a group of scientists and researchers gathered in a meeting at the campus of Gauhati University, Assam, to discuss the "Man-made Environmental Problems of North East India". One the major resolutions taken up during the discussion was to form a society under the name and style "Society for Environmental Protection, Education and Research" and on the same date the first executive body was elected with Late Professor Suryya Kanta Sarmah as the founding President of the Society. Subsequently, the society was registered with the Registrar of Societies, Assam on 12-02-1990 vide the Regd. no. 3053 of 1989-1990 under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. During the last three decades, the society has worked mostly towards the generation of environmental awareness among the people of Assam through various activities including seminars, workshops, popular talks, plantation drives etc. The society has also published booklets and leaflets in vernacular language for generation of environmental awareness among the common people.
